Today in History – March 1

On March 1, 1872, President Ulysses S. Grant signed the Yellowstone National Park Protection Act into law, establishing Yellowstone as the first national park in the United States and the world. The act preserved 2.2 million acres of unique geothermal features and wilderness for public use and protection.
