The election is over. It is time to have an initial reflection and ponder about what will happen in the near future. Many of my friends expressed concerns from a value/ethical perspective; worrying about the plight of the minority groups, women’s reproductive rights, social justice, justice in the Russia/Ukraine/Israel/Palestinian wars etc. In this election, the concerns of the slight majority clearly are not in those areas. The focus of the Trump campaign is in 3 main areas: Trump’s personal charisma (and a perverted masculinity), economy (the concern about immigration is mainly economic), a “conservative” culture (pseudo-religiosity and racism/sexism). According to the “exit polls”, the main driving force for the Trump voters is economy. Trump’s charisma ultimately depends on what he has achieved. He definitely has achieved a lot through his showmanship. People love his rambling, story telling, speaking out his “honest” thoughts/feelings in his shows/rallies. However, his ability to administer a nation is that of a moron. “Luckily”, he was able to surround himself with some good and competent people in his last term. He made a good show in foreign relationship with North Korea and barely avoided losing anything with the help of his foreign policy team. His other foreign policy “achievements” were made through his “unpredictability” and fleeing from any principle of justice. In areas of trade & the economy, he actually has not achieved much. The trade deficit with China was high as ever by the end of his first term. The economic growth was just an extension of the rebound after reversal of the “self-inflicted” great recession, the rebound occured in the Obama era. The COVID pandemic has exposed his “moronic” incapability in dealing with real national/international crisis. Adding to the suffering is his politicization of the pandemic, invoking the anti-intellectual/anti-science sentiment among the “conservatives”, the damaging effects that we can still experience today and is going to affect our future too. We will not be that “lucky” in Trump’s 2nd term. His Jan 6 attempted “coup” caused many good and competent people to run away from him. The architects of Project 2025 will now become his main policy support team. Their main goal is ideological, not economic. They want to bring about an Orbanian revolution to convert the US into an “illiberal democracy”. Economically, in order to please the Trump voters, they will have to blow up a big economic bubble. If that happens, the implosion of it will be unprecedentedly catastrophic. We don’t know whether there will be another pandemic to test the capability of Trump’s 2nd administration. Climate change effects are increasingly globally evident. Home insurance is becoming prohibitively high in disaster prone areas. And disaster prone areas are expanding. Climate change effects are beginning to affect agriculture. At a time the world needs more cooperation in dealing with critical problems facing the human race, the arrogance and ignorance of Trump America in pursuing isolationism will ultimately bring unrecoverable catastrophe to our own land. I hope things won’t happen to cause any “buyer remorse” in the Trump voters. Or even worse, like a frog dying in gradually warming water, to die without remorse. I wish we are really just sleeping, still can be waken by wake-up calls. For those who are trying to plug their ears or smash the alarms, your sleeping is not real, and your destiny is sealed… if that’s the case, tragically, we will all share the same fate.
